Chinese Ambassador to Botswana Fan Yong Attends the Groundbreaking Ceremony of the Khoemacau Copper Mine Expansion Project

On February 6, Chinese Ambassador Fan Yong attended the groundbreaking ceremony for the the Khoemacau Copper Mine Expansion Project. Minister of Minerals and Energy, Hon. Bogolo Kenewendo, the Paramount Chief of the Batawana, Kgosikgolo Tawana II, Economic and Commercial Counselor of Chinese Embassy, Mr. Lan Yuqiang, Vice President of China Minmetals, Mr. Xu Jiqing, and representatives from local community attended the ceremony. Senior executives of China Minmetals Corporation attended virtually from Beijing.



In his speech, Ambassador Fan stated that the Khoemacau Copper Mine Project represents China's largest investment in Botswana, and the expansion will contribute positively to advancing Botswana's industrialization process and socio-economic development. He also introduced the Four Global Initiatives, pointing out that China and Botswana will strengthen strategic alignment and carry out more pragmatic cooperation under frameworks such as the Global Development Initiative and the Belt and Road Initiative.


Minister Kenewendo spoke highly of the expansion project, stating that it will create numerous job opportunities, vigorously promote the diversification of Botswana's mining industry, and bring more opportunities for local socio-economic development.
